The Blue Ridge Parkway is home to the most widely known hiking areas in Ashe County many of which have great picnic areas located along the hike providing a great spot to enjoy lunch. Beginners should try the Jumpingoff Rocks trail, and hikers looking for an adventure should inquire about the hiking around the Devil’s Stairs, which is reportedly haunted by the spirits of construction workers that died long ago.

Ashe County is home to two state park areas, Mount Jefferson State Park and the New River State Park. Mount Jefferson park is an excellent place to start hiking as there are a variety of trails to suit any level of hiker. Mount Jefferson is part of a region known as Three Top Mountain, which is an area known for its abundance of hiking trails. Here one can hike atop Mount Jefferson via the Summit Trail, or see some breathtaking scenery and flowers via the Rhododendron Trail.

Other parts of the Three Top Mountain chain include, Bluff Mountain and Paddy Mountain. Bluff Mountain is a naturalist’s dream as it is managed by The Nature Conservancy and full of native wildlife and plant life. Bird watching is a popular activity atop Bluff Mountain, so be sure to bring your binoculars if you choose to hike around Bluff Mountain in Ashe County. Nearby, Paddy Mountain sits at an elevation of 4,331 feet above sea level and offers some phenomenal views of the surrounding Southern Appalachian mountains. Here the views span for miles and miles and hikers regularly report seeing black bears and bobcats!
